Bornova Yeşilova Tumulus Visitor’s Center Architectural Design Competition (2009)
Team: Yiğit Acar, M. Kadri Atabaş, R. Tunç Yaman
The Yeşilova Tumulus settlement has been demolished 11 times over a span of 1500 years, yet it continues to be inhabited by humans. This intentional desire to 'exist in a place' forms the fundamental concept of the design.
The proposed 'settlement' is shielded from the city by a large wall. This wall serves as both a symbol of protection for the settlement and provides architectural coherence to what lies beyond it—a village-like archaeological center designed to create an intricate and humane environment. The site is further safeguarded from natural forces by another set of barriers—wind catchers located to the north. These wind catchers not only regulate airflow within the site but also obstruct the view of the highway that runs alongside the archaeological site.
