Escher-ish: An Experiment with Drafting through Toolmaking (ADA 131 Architectural Drawing, Spring 2005)
Instructors: Yiğit Acar (Course Coordinator), Osman Batuhan Türker.
In 2025, within the drawing studio of ADA 131, we have experimented with the dynamic relationship between the tool and the drawing process. This assignment, titled Escher-ish, explores how custom-designed instruments can shape architectural representation, particularly through plan oblique and section oblique projections. Inspired by the intricate visual logic of M.C. Escher, our focus extended beyond traditional drafting to a more investigative and iterative approach. Over the course of several weeks, we developed, refined, and tested personalized drawing tools that enabled the modular construction of architectural forms, integrating elements such as stairs and walkable slopes. Through repeated trials, varied media, and compositional experimentation, the project not only challenged our understanding of oblique geometry but also emphasized the significance of the drawing instrument as a conceptual and generative device.
