The international urban design competition for the design of Taksim Square was held during the lockdowns imposed by the global pandemic. As a result, the competition generated a substantial record of the process. The high amount of recorded data is a rare opportunity to revisit existing literature and develop new insights into urban design competitions. Using two sets of data; a review of professionals' discussions and the social media commentaries on the competition, this research presents the perspectives of professionals and the general public on urban design competitions. It evaluates the findings through the framework of participation and populism.
